One reason scholars often cite in support of the authenticity of the scriptures is the way in which it includes some very unflattering stories about its major characters. The disciples are no exception to this rule as the New Testament shares many of their mistakes right alongside their successes. Here’s a list of the Top 10 Worst Moments Of The Disciples.

#10: James and John’s Mother Asks Jesus For A Favor

Matthew 20:20-28

20 Then came to him the mother of the sons of Zebedee with her sons, kneeling and asking a certain thing of him.
21 He said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Command that these, my two sons, may sit, one on your right hand, and one on your left hand, in your kingdom."
22 But Jesus answered, "You don't know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" They said to him, "We are able."
23 He said to them, "You will indeed drink my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with, but to sit on my right hand, and on my left hand, is not mine to give; but it is for whom it has been prepared by my Father."
24 When the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation concerning the two brothers.
25 But Jesus called them to him, and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them.
26 It shall not be so among you, but whoever would become great among you will be your servant.
27 Whoever would be first among you will be your bondservant,
28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Translation: World English Bible

#9: The Disciples Rebuke People Who Bring Children To Jesus

Mark 10:13-16

13 They were bringing to him little children, that he should touch them, but the disciples rebuked those who were bringing them.
14 But when Jesus saw it, he was moved with indignation, and said to them, "Allow the little children to come to me! Don't forbid them, for to such belong the kingdom of God.
15 Most assuredly I tell you, whoever will not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he will in no way enter therein."
16 He took them in his arms, and blessed them, laying his hands on them.

Translation: World English Bible

#8: Peter Cuts Off The Ear Of A Guard Coming To Arrest Jesus

Matthew 26:47-56

47 While he was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief priest and elders of the people.
48 Now he who betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, "Whoever I will kiss, that is he. Take him."
49 Immediately he came to Jesus, and said, "Hail, Rabbi!" and kissed him.
50 Jesus said to him, "Friend, why are you here?" Then they came and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.
51 Behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck the servant of the high priest, and struck off his ear.
52 Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place, for all those who take the sword will die by the sword.
53 Or do you think that I can't ask my Father, and he would even now send me more than twelve legions of angels?
54 How then would the scriptures be fulfilled that it must be so?"
55 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, "Have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to seize me? I sat daily in the temple teaching, and you didn't arrest me.
56 But all this has happened, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples left him, and fled.

Translation: World English Bible

#7: Thomas Doubts Jesus Is Alive

John 20:19-29

19 When therefore it was evening, on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were locked where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, "Peace be to you."
20 When he had said this, he showed to them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad when they saw the Lord.
21 Jesus therefore said to them again, "Peace be to you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you."
22 When he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit!
23 Whoever's sins you forgive, they are forgiven to them. Whoever's sins you retain, they are retained."
24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, wasn't with them when Jesus came.
25 The other disciples therefore said to him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe."
26 After eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being locked, and stood in the midst, and said, "Peace be to you."
27 Then he said to Thomas, "Reach here your finger, and see my hands. Reach here your hand, and put it into my side. Don't be faithless, but believing."
28 Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"
29 Jesus said to him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen, and have believed."

Translation: World English Bible

#6: Peter Says Jesus Pays The Temple Tax And Gets A Miraculous Lesson Is Tax Collecting

Matthew 17:24-27

24 When they were come to Capernaum, those who collected the didrachmas came to Peter, and said, "Doesn't your teacher pay the didrachma?"
25 He said, "Yes." When he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth receive toll or tribute? From their sons, or from strangers?"
26 Peter said to him, "From strangers." Jesus said to him, "Therefore the sons are exempt.
27 But, lest we cause them to stumble, go to the sea, and cast a hook, and take up the first fish that comes up. When you have opened his mouth, you will find a stater. Take that, and give it to them for me and you."

Translation: World English Bible

Worst Moments of The Disciples Honorable Mentions

Though capable of great accomplishments through the Holy Spirit, the disciples were still just regular men. Because of his impulsive nature, Peter had a real knack for acting and speaking without thinking. Here are three of Peter’s most cringe-worthy moments that didn’t make our list:

Peter Tells Jesus He Shouldn’t Die on the Cross

Matthew 16:21-28

21 From that time, Jesus began to show to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.
22 Peter took him aside, and began to rebuke him, saying, "Far be it from you, Lord! This will never be done to you."
23 But he turned, and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling-block to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but the things of men."
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If any man desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever will lose his life for my sake will find it.
26 For what will it profit a man, if he will gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life?
27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then will he render to every man according to his deeds.
28 Most assuredly I tell you, there are some standing here, who will in no way taste of death, until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."

Translation: World English Bible

Peter Tells Jesus He Doesn’t Want Him To Wash His Feet

John 13:17

17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

Translation: World English Bible

Peter Recommends Building Three Shelters Immediately After Seeing Moses and Elijah At The Transfiguration

Matthew 17:1-13

1 After six days, Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John, his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain by themselves.
2 He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as the light.
3 Behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah talking with him.
4 Peter answered, and said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you want, let's make three tents here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. Behold, a voice out of the cloud, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him."
6 When the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces, and were very afraid.
7 Jesus came and touched them and said, "Get up, and don't be afraid."
8 Lifting up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus alone.
9 As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, "Don't tell anyone what you saw, until the Son of Man has risen from the dead."
10 His disciples asked him, saying, "Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?
11 Jesus answered them, "Elijah indeed comes first, and will restore all things,
12 but I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they didn't recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted to. Even so will the Son of Man also suffer by them."
13 Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptizer.

Translation: World English Bible

#5: Peter Takes His Eyes Off Of Jesus And Begins To Sink

Matthew 14:22-36

22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
23 After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain apart to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.
24 But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
25 In the fourth watch of the night Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.
26 When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It is a ghost!" and they cried out for fear.
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying "Cheer up! I AM! Don't be afraid."
28 Peter answered him and said, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters."
29 He said, "Come!" Peter went down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Jesus.
30 But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!"
31 Immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"
32 When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.
33 Those who were in the boat came and worshipped him, saying, "You are truly the Son of God!"
34 When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.
35 When the men of that place recognized him, they sent into all that region round about, and brought to him all who were sick,
36 and they begged him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.

Translation: World English Bible

#4: James And John Offer To Call Down Fire From Heaven

Luke 9:51-56

51 It came to pass, when the days were near that he should be taken up, he intently set his face to go to Jerusalem,
52 and sent messengers before his face. They went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, so as to prepare for him.
53 They didn't receive him, because he was traveling with his face set towards Jerusalem.
54 When his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, "Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky, and destroy them, just as Elijah did?"
55 But he turned and rebuked them, "You don't know what kind of spirit you are of.
56 For the Son of Man didn't come to destroy men's lives, but to save them." They went to another village.

Translation: World English Bible

#3: The Disciples Argue Over Which One Of Them Is The Greatest

Luke 22:24-32

24 There arose also a contention among them, which of them was considered to be greatest.
25 He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called 'benefactors.'
26 But not so with you. But one who is the greater among you, let him become as the lesser, and one who is governing, as one who serves.
27 For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Isn't it he who sits at the table? But I am in the midst of you as one who serves.
28 But you are those who have continued with me in my temptations.
29 I appoint to you a kingdom, even as my Father appointed to me,
30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. You will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel."
31 The Lord said, "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat,
32 but I prayed for you, that your faith wouldn't fail. You, when once you have turned again, establish your brothers."

Translation: World English Bible

#2: Peter Denies Christ Three Times

Matthew 26:69-75

69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the court, and a maid came to him, saying, "You were also with Jesus, the Galilean."
70 But he denied before them all, saying, "I don't know what you are talking about."
71 When he had gone out onto the porch, someone else saw him, and said to those who were there, "This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth."
72 Again he denied with an oath, "I don't know the man."
73 After a little while those who stood by came and said to Peter, "Surely you are also one of them, for your speech makes you known."
74 Then began he to curse and to swear, "I don't know the man!" Immediately the cock crowed.
75 Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said to him, "Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times." He went out and wept bitterly.

Chapter 20
